I recall, some years ago, installing SuSE (?7.1/2) on someone's machine which was equipped with hard drives configured as RAID..
As I recall, there was an issue about booting from a RAID setup. Basically, you needed either to have the boot stuff on a non-RAID drive, or else to boot from a floppy. If the boot files were on the RAID array then it would not work.
I don't know if things have changed since then, and I certainly don't claim any reliable knowledge of RAID setups.
So if any of you thinks this may have something to do with Joao's problems, and knows about RAID and booting, then please spell out for him how to proceed!
Ted.
You can boot from RAID level 1 (mirror) with no problems. When installing 9.0 the boot loader was automaticaly changed from grub to lilo when I set up a mirrored system. This is due to a bug in grub. If I changed the boot loader back to grub, the system would not boot (I had the same problems with my Fedora box wich did not automaticaly switch boot loaders). In any case, the system will boot if lilo is used. However, only the first drive has the loader on the MBR. Once booted you can switch to grub and setup the MBR on both drives. You can even edit menu.1st to include an entry to boot the mirror. This may be needed depending on how you bios handles a primary drive failure. # grub grub> device (hd0) /dev/hdb grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0) Grub> quit The above assumes that the /boot partition is the first partition and would load grub on the second drive. This can also be done by booting in rescue mode and mount and chroot your system. Check out: http://www.doorbot.com/guides/linux/x86/grubraid/ -- Louis D. Richards LDR Interactive Technologies
