This may be a dim question, but what does /var/lib/mysql/mysql.log say
when you try starting it?

"040401 12:56:42 mysqld started
/usr/sbin/mysqld: ready for connections.
Version: '4.0.15' socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' port: 3306"

- - is what I get in the log when starting a (working) mysqld under 9.0

best wishes.
