From: Berge, Harry ten [SMTP:berge@hitt.nl] I've read that the X.org group released their new X server. This is basically a fork of XFree86RC2 (the latest version without 'the license issue') with additional stuff.
As I read it I get the feeling that this is basically the end of XFree86. Does SUSE ship 9.1 with this X server?
"SUSE LINUX does not endorse the XFree86 project's recent license changes. Hence, SUSE will not include versions of XFree86 subject to the project's modified license in future SUSE product offerings. SUSE LINUX 9.1, available in April 2004, and the next generation of SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server, available in summer 2004, will include an enhanced version of X11 based on a XFree86 version prior to the license change." AFAIK, that means 4.4rc2, with some SUSE patches. "For the future we are exploring different options, e.g. X.org and freedesktop.org, to establish a reliable alternative that lets our customers benefit from future enhancements in Linux desktop infrastructure technology." I think it's a fairly safe bet that 9.2 will be using the X.org tree, since that represents a painless transition from 4.4rc2. Note that some of the changes in XFree86 after 4.4rc2 may well make it into X.org, since X.org will approach the individual developers to ask if they are happy to relicense their contributions under a more permissive license.
