[Fri, 02 Apr 2004 22:26:35 +1000]: The new card uses the Conexant CX2388X series chipset, and the scan of its innards produces the following info:
The CX2388X is supported by any 2.6 kernel, but according to the bttv author (a colleague of mine), the support isn't perfect yet.
Support at SuSE suggest that I post a message here for help, and could also try using the "default" kernel 2.6.4 (which they don't support) - I've looked in the directory for the Mantel kernel build and can see 2 versions of the default kernel as well as 2 versions of the source rpms and don't know which I should download
Depends on the kernel you're using right now. A 'rpm -qa | grep -F k_' should show you if it's k_deflt, k_smp or k_athlon. If it's k_dflt or k_athlon, you should download the kernel-default package, if it's k_smp, you need kernel-smp.
(I guess I'll also have to download the source code to be able to compile the kernel to fit my current setup, right? Or is it only the source code I need to compile?).
Depends on what you need as there's normally no need to compile your own kernel. But if you do want to compile your own kernel, it's the kernel-source*.i586.rpm you want and *not* the .src.rpm.

Thank you for the information. Greatly appreciated, and I will now download and try out the 2.6 kernel. I don't suppose your colleague has any idea when a decent working version of the applic to handle this CX chipset will become available (the tv card which I bought is really nice to use).
