I now have it operational... and thank you for all your input.
Now, how does one add the base pkg database to the sources??
When I install APT and synaptic the first thing I do is open a terminal as root and type in 'apt-get update' without the quotes. This downloades and fills the apt sources database. You should see it downloading all the data from the repositories listed in your /etc/apt/sources.list file. It has been suggested to me to remove the 'base' repository from the sources list. Then when you run synaptic you should see all the files. You can then run update from synaptic. Great. Many thanks. :-) I had tried putting 'base' repository in there and it seemed to cause problems. I'll remove it. I haven't yet used synaptic... I updated the listing as you suggested and am now doing a d/l & install to see if it works as a well-oiled machine should.
