I asked my System Admin a similar question the other day. He told me the best way is to open the box, and look with a flashlight for a "silkscreened" name on MB.
He said the "name brand" boards will have one, whereas the "off brands" probably will just have a number, if that.
However, he said if you can't find a name, try and find the FCC registration number.
You can then look on FCC data base for "who" applied for the registration and hopefully they have a web site.
There is also a site www.wimsbios.com that will tell you how to use the bios id number at boot to locate the manufacturer, make, and model of your board if the above doesn't work for you. I know a lot of board makers don't do a good job of marking some times. HTH, will
