As kinternet sometimes hangs during or after getting email I studied the alternative wvdial. Somebody on the list meant that wvdial was without this kind of problems
The permissions have to be changed to 'root.dialout' and you will succeed.
Did that, quit kinternet and asked kmail to check Mail in. Got the info Error unknown host pop.indo.net.id (my isp). Something does not seem so right. What did I do wrong. And when the wvdial runs, how do I stop the connection if I think it has been long enough for my dial up connection?
Regarding your kmail, you might want to make certain you have not misspelled something. That happened to me & wasn't immediately caught.
In Kmail no misspelling because it works with Kinternet.
As for disconnection... I put a desktop icon for application, and put the wvdial command, therein, as well as enabling 'run in terminal'. That way, one can minimize it & when you want it closed, just close the term.
First tried to use wvdial in a terminal and still get the info
--> Can't read config file /etc/wvdial.conf: Permission denied
Checked in the users and dialout is in the groups. Mode of wvdial.conf was 0600, changed that now to 0770. That allows me to wvdial from a user. But now the modem dies with following info:
CONNECT 45333/ARQ/V90/LAPM/V42BIS --> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately. --> Starting pppd at Fri Apr 2 01:13:40 2004 --> pid of pppd: 2639 --> Disconnecting at Fri Apr 2 01:13:40 2004 --> The PPP daemon has died: No root priv error (exit code = 3) --> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail. --> I guess that's it for now, exiting --> The PPP daemon has died. (exit code = 3)
And via the application window same without this text visible of course. pppd mode is set to 0775. Kmail: Something in your config just cannot be right! If you're connected, it should work just the same as w/kinternet or kppp.
Connection problems: You probably should also check 'pppd' to see that suid bit is set. One can add that to 'permissions.local' to set the permissions. The pppd file has the habit of changing back to non-suid. Until you get the permissions set you'll affect Kmail's ability to d/l e-mail, and it seems to me that you are not connecting properly if you get the msgs you specified. Sorry 'bout the 'pppd' oversight. - -- ...CH Avoid doing business with 'The Link' ISP.
