this part I can answer, unless you are teaching something really
esoteric, Suse installs the latest java versions available at freeze
for stamping, packaging, and shipping deadline. On 9.0 it was Sus's
version of 1.4.2 for 9.1 due in stores end of April-ish I haven't yet
looked but suspect it will be the latest stable one available when they
froze the version for the above reasons...
AS for reasons to buy, well, Enterprise service is never going to be
free... but they have a lot of good things going for them if you are
going to wind up paying somebody... IIRC there is/was a guarrantee of
a version freeze for 3 years ( which might be up , but worth
investigating, certainly...) the price I believe includes some of the
"help" was builtin to the price? or is a contract at a fixed price...
in either case if you think you need a lot of it, it will be worth the
price as long as it is provided. I have found that often on other
systems, Help is only given for a narrow list of items ( that is
usually a "free" thing for 90 days w/ suse's pro versions. IT is
however strictly limited to the installation , meaning you have a box
which boots to a desktop, all periferils and otehr stuff you might like
to include are probably not a part of the free help. They do have a per
incident type of help availbale also, or did last time I looked....
Those things are expressly spelled out ahead of time, so there
shouldn't be, even tho there always is, any disputes.
However, I should think you are talking about a commercial setup in
which case. while you do not want to over pay... it might be best for
the first go rounds to get the full care package.. the exact cost of
which is probably something between you and the Suse sales folks...
There are likely ways around the visual basic items as well, but I'd
refer you there to the Crossover Office people, they do a wine version
that allows many of the things MS makes to run just fine, they will
also offer to work w. you on having anything they aren't now doing
specifically run... Do be aware tho, if you use the IE browser and
soem of the other program on hte internet, you are open to a lot of the
problems as if you ran them on windows... so beware what real
information is available to someone who might want to snoop, or keep
those programs uninstalled... Crossover Office and otehr items are by
