This is the article I referred to - in not quite nice terms :-) - in my 
original message. What is in it did nothing to solve my problem at the 
time, and I suspect that it may be pertinent to someone who a a real USB 
2.0-capable motherboard and doesn't have the new 2.6 kernel.
