Which version of firefox are you using? If you got it from mozilla.org, please 
make sure you use their gtk2/xft enabled version available at

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/0.8/firefox-0.8-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz

and *not* the one listed on the front page of mozilla.org
