why don't you use mldonkey/mlnet and kmldonkey as frontend.
It even comes with SuSE 9.0, you can install with yast, or download the latest versions.
From my experience it is better / more stable than amule / xmule.
However I switched to gift / apollon, which gives you kazaa but not emule. It does not grab the NIC and block all other traffic to the internet, now I can check my emails and browse without stopping downloads.
I would never go back to amule / xmule. It is too annoying to stop them everytime I want to browse or check emails. (And yes, I tried slowing them down using their config files, didn't help much)

I finally went to the Sourceforge FTP site & d/l the file Clayton recommended, and it adds the servers w/o issue. I would still like to get the problem w/'make' figured out, however.
