If I want to temporarily disable the IPTABLES commands, to relax the firewall for a while, how can I achieve this?
without knowing your tables it is difficult to say yet

        iptables -F INPUT
        iptables -F OUTPUT
        iptables -F FORWARD
        iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT
        iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT
        iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT
        iptables -F
        iptables -X
        iptables -t nat -F
        iptables -t nat -X
        iptables -t mangle -F
        iptables -t mangle -X

On the other hand I would say use the SuSEfirewall2 as it is easier. One
comment firewalls are not to be in "relaxed mode" they should do their
job protecting your network
