I am setting up a server also, but I don't find the problems you have, however, I am running SuSE 9.0. My suggestions from what I have learned.
1. Boot into runlevel 3. This can be done by setting up the boot with yast.
2. By booting into runlevel 3, if you want to use GUI for setup, then all you have to do is login and startx. This keeps KDE and/or Gnome out of the picture. After you are finished, you logout and the computer is back to runlevel 3. You do not have to be loggein as root or user for the server to perform its functions as a server and is also more secure.
3. I am planning on upgrading to SuSE 9.1 when it comes out. I have updated KDE to 3.2.1 and it is much faster. The new 2.6 kernel is supposed to be faster even.
It is. I tried Quake3 on WinXp and Linux 2.6 and the second gave me a better impression. Praise
