We used to be able to do this on UnixWare, right now we are in the middle of switching from UnixWare to SuSE on our servers and this is one of the little things that is bugging us yet...

Yes, you can do this in both KDE or GNOME. For KDE, open the Control Center, look in System Administration - Login Manager. For GNOME, run 'gdmsetup'. Chris
