I bet this subject will turn some heads ;) I had Win XP home installed on my comp previously with the exact same hardware config (actually when i had windows on the comp it had 128 LESS RAM than it does now, as well as more periferals, namely a joystick and a printer) I hate to say it, but XP was running faster and better then my current Linux installation. I WANT TO PROVE TO MYSELF THAT LINUX IS BETTER THAN WIN XP BUT IT IS HARD TO DO WHEN XP WAS RUNNING FASTER IN ALL DEPARTMENTS THEN LINUX evan though the harware config IS IN FAVER OF LINUX. i am running SuSE 8.2 pro on a comp w/ a 500 MHz intel celeron and ~500 MB RAM. It is going to be a server but KDE runs kind of slow while i am working on it. Any tips on how i can get it running faster. Things like unnessisary functions that are automatically started upon startup that i can disable, fancy things like animated menues that can be disabled, or just miner tweeks that i can apply to sqeeze a little more speed out of my proccesor.
