Greetings: My Suse 8.1 systems which have been running for about 1.5 years are seeming to become increasingly sluggish, particularly in regards to disk access. Some simple operation like marking all my posts read for this list in Mozilla's mail folders causes a long buzz from the drive. I had started a new, empty folder just because I thought the problem might be that the original folder has thousands of messages, but now the new folder seems to be slow too. It makes me wonder if there is a fragmentation problem, or some other maintenance needs to be done. Unfortunately I haven't been able to run with DMA enabled for the HD drive on this machine, but I have another machine with DMA enabled, and it is experiencing the same apparent slowdown. I had a really strange problem the other day with VMware, in which the screen refresh was taking a very long time, so about 2 times per second there was a half second hangup. This was fixed by deleting all the files in the /tmp dir. Sometimes this helps things. Any other tips? Thanks. -- ____________________________________ Christopher R.
