Greetings --
I have SuSE 9 installed by the vendor on a computer without a DVD drive. The software media source is still given as the /dev/hda DVD player they used.
How can I change the setup to look for packages on the online mirrors? When I try to add an ftp source, such as
ftp ftp.suse.com pub/suse/x86_64/9.0/
I get this error:
Unable to create installation source from URL 'ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/x86_64/9.0/'. Details: ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media)
I realize that the online repositories do not contain the disk images, but I don't need that -- I just want to install additional rpms from the online sources, on top of the existing installation.
I posted the answer to this quite recently, though it's not reasonable for anyone here to assume knowledge of previous posts. The steps for bypassing the error are: 1. Using a browser, view the ftp directory containing the rpms you want. That provides verification of its location. 2. If the directory path doesn't end in /suse/i586, it's not usable. 3. Put the server name in the first Yast box for an additional source and the rest of the path in the second Yast box, omitting the initial slash and (this is vital) the /suse/i586 at the end. (There's some controversy over omitting the initial slash.) 4. Specify anonymous ftp. Hope this solves your problem. The answer definitely belongs in some FAQ or other. Paul Abrahams
