I was using version 1.4, which isn't very old. It turns out that the problem (at least for me) wasn't the version. It's a security setting. Sun works fine if you do Edit>Prefrences... Privacy and Security Validation + Do not use OCSP for cetificate validation. At least on Mozilla 1.6. ...if you've time to rebuild mozilla every week, you might want to put your GPG public key on a public keyserver.
