"Flavio Meazza"
have a problem with logging on my VT's. When I press ctrl+alt+F{1,2,...,6} and enter in "login:" line "root" (or another local user login), the screen is refreshing and nothing happens. My SuSE is 9.0 Pro. If anybody knows this problem, please help. Please be a bit more specific. Are you saying that the user enters the login and password information then the screen clears and post another login prompt??? Or, does the screen not clear. Or, does it return you to the graphics screen.
After doing the login on a VT, what is the result of lastlog. That
should tell you if the login was successful.
Also, your /etc/inittab file should contain:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --noclear tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3
4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty4
5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
Note that 2-6 will clear the screen after a logout, but 1 is set not to
clear because it contains the console log.
This is all I can think of at the present time. There are some options
on mingetty, but I don't think they are that useful. Also, you might
make sure that you have the appropriate shell and home directories set
up, but you would then see this problem on a Konsole or Xterm.
The problem could very well be a bug in one of the login scripts. It is
possible that /etc/profile /etc/profile.local are messed up. I made a
seemingly innocuous change to by .bashrc file, and virtually rendered by
userid useless.
