I need help with mathematica 5.0 and Suse 9.0. I am having problems when plotting real small numbers. For instance Sin[x] will plot fine but 5E-6*Sin[x] will cause mathematica to freeze. Has anyone seen this issue previously.
Yes. I reported a similar bug to a local reseller several months ago: Mathematica 5.0 GUI freezes when the ListPlot[] command plots small numbers. The response was that it worked with Windows 2000. Nevertheless they sent the bug report to WRI and the response was: Thank you for taking the time to send us this report. I have forwarded your examples to our development group. This is a problem our developers are aware of and they are working on resolving the issue.Unfortunately, there are no general solutions to this problem at this point in time. I am sorry for any inconvenience caused by this problem. Sincerely, Technical Support Wolfram Research, Inc. support@wolfram.com I haven't heard anything new since then. SUSE Linux 8.2 and Solaris 9 are also affected by this bug. IMHO the developers had known about the bug even before Mathematica 5.0 was released. Mathematica 5.0 worked on Windows and nothing else mattered. As a workaround, I call the Math kernel directly from an Emacs shell. It gives me history and command line editing. Graphics goes to a special window. If I need the notebook then I use Mathematica 4.2. But the copy and paste feature doesn't work well there. -- A.M.
