It works, but now my screen is not scaled anymore. From this change I deduct it's the xv extention that isn't working anymore (I normally run with -vo xv). Does this sound plausible? Can it be prevented?
Yes I concluded that the xv extension was the source of my problems when I tried playing any video media files using mplayer or xine. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find another (better?) fix yet. Another poster suggested reconfiguring X to use 16 bit colours instead of 24.. I'll try that when I have the chance.
Ah, but there's something special about my case: it works fine until I've started (and closed) a second X session. xv normally is no problem on my computer, but somehow having run a second X sessions ruins everything.
