actually i'm not sure :) i've spent nearly 2 weeks on this problem and changed so much stuff and then reverted back and then changed again i'm not exactly sure what i'm using anymore :) and with sax seemingly broken on this box it's a little difficult to get everything clean again.
so the list was my last hope, but i didn't see anyone else with anything quite like this one so i am assuming it's me and in all likelyhood it is and i'm hoping someone spots what i've done wrong.

Why aren't you using Driver "r128"?
(I must apologize for misreading your first post -- you did mention that it was a PCI card and that X hung, rather than just ran slowly -- it is almost bedtime, and I get a lot more foggy near my bedtime.:-)
