Since you are running a private network, the gateway address is the IP
address of the system on your network that has the connection to the
outside world. If you have a cable modem router, it's address is
probably 192.168.1.1.
While you should use YaST to set the parameters, you can add a line to
the routing table (as root):
route add 0 gw 192.168.1.1
This will set up your default route. It is normally set up automatically
on boot. If you have a static IP address on your system, then you must
specify the default gateway. If you have a dynamic address, then dhcp
should set it up for you.
One caveat. I noticed on SuSE 8.2 on my laptop that when I used both my
built-in ethernet connection and my wireless connection, I got a routing
table as above, but this seems to be fixed in 9.0 although I now use
profiles.
