Did this yesterday... No need to bake your own kernel although the 
kernel sources (RPM in yast) should be installed.

Look at  http://www.suse.de/en/private/download/xfree86/index.html
And especially at 
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/XFree86/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html
for your particular version.
