At home I can easily configure the email client (mozilla) to access my university pop server and log in using my username and my password. Usually the username you just need to give once. In this way I can check my mails from the "Uni" account. Now, to send mails through this account I can use the smtp server from my internet provider, simply by giving the server address, unchecking password requirement in the email account configuration. So, pop server from your University account, smtp server from your ISP could be an alternative. Hope it helps, sorry if I misunderstood your question or if it is of little help, Felipe Leon.
