Quoting John Pettigrew
I have an existing wired LAN, but I want to put the second PC further away in our house. I was wondering whether a wireless LAN might be an easy way to go. Am I right in thinking that (in the simple 2-box setup I'm envisaging) all I need is two wifi (802/11.b or similar) cards, similar to a 2-box wired LAN? And is there anything I need to look out for in terms of cards that are supported by SuSE 8.2?
I've just got a Wireless lan working with 9.0 SuSE. After buying the Belkin Wireless cards (Broadcom chipset-aaaaaaahhhhh don't touch with a barge pole), I finally went and got a Netgear PCI Card (model WGP 301 I think) as it is easily available in the UK. I've had numerous problems with SuSE 9.0 and in the end configured a Master point (this is not available using YaST) and link all the other machines to this master, so effectively it is a Wireless Router. If you want to see the config files, I can email them to you, just make sure the card doesn't use the Broadcom chipset and everything should work. Beware most 802.11G cards use the Broadcom chipset.
