I knew it. I entered one lousy command and screwed everything up. Now my printer doesn't work and the nice little graphical logon screen is gone. I entered:
rchotplug restart
That's it. (The restart failed by the way.) I didn't notice until a few minutes later that I could no longer print. I decided to try the Microsoft standard fix (I rebooted) and that's when I found out that the logon screen was gone. What the heck happened? (I'm running Gnome 2.2.2 under SuSE 9.0. I'm using CUPS printing.) Any help would be appreciated here.

Have you looked in /var/log/messages to see why rchotplug failed? Post what is stated there. That's usually the first place I look when system stuff gives me grief.

What a mess I got myself into. When I tried to reply with the info you requested, I discovered that I could no longer send e-mail. Troubleshooting on my own with some help from this list, I managed to get the camera recognized, got the printer working again, and managed to get my e-mail to work. The only thing left is the logon screen but I'm going to launch a new thread for that one. The main reason I'm posting this is to thank all those who took the time to provide assistance. Thanks.
