Yes - the error means your monitor cannot display at the refresh rate you have set.The relevant information (horizontal and vertical refresh rates) will be in the monitor manual.
You did keep the manual, didn't you...

It is not my monitor and thus I don't have the manual if it exists. If you have it the monitor was detected as CPQ 1399 ????
If Windoze is installed, you should be able to extract the info from there. Otherwise look it up on the web. Use the ID stuck on the monitor itself, not what Windoze or Linux tells you it is.

I often buy used monitors and they never come with Manuals. However, a little google searching with the info found on the back of the monitor usually yields the required info.
I probably don't understand everything I need to know about Sax2. However, what I have found is if I try to change Sax2 settings, while in run level 5, it usually gives me fits; so I usually make the changes from a tty console in Runlevel 3, after exiting out of KDM (or GDM).

I boot always on run-level 3 Thank for all your help. Solved the problem the following way though: man sax2 -l Enable low resolution. Allow only the 640x480 resolution for the graphic setup. So I finally managed to launch SAX2 to enter the right parameters. SAX1 was a pain in the ass but SAX2 has one imperfection. If the monitor was correctly recognised during SuSE-8.1 installation: no problem. Configuration goes automatically. But if the monitor was not correctly recognised and configured, impossible to launch SAX2 because SAX2 insist to display a window with the wrong parameters in XF86.config. Thus: sax2 -l : in my case it worked. -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631
