OK, thanks. Just got the time to post regarding the fix.
When you reminded me of the navigator CD, I dug around for a couple of hours
and used it.
Apparently the the "old horse" threw a shoe, or at least a ram chip went
flakey. Pulled the offending chip and SuSE installed flawlessly.

I've installed several OS's on Netservers. Using the Navigator CD makes
it much easier. The Navigator CD is like Compaq's SmartStart CD. You
need to buy it from HP, go to their website and order it online or call
their toll-free phone #.
