I tried the suggestions from LinuxWorld999 (boot with no ACPI) and Jerome Krough (creating my own XFree86 config file). The first did nothing, and I managed to mangle the config file so badly that I just started over with a fresh install. Despite a few minor problems in the install the display now fills the screen. The only change I made from the first install was to change to the highest resolution available from F2 on the initial install screen. (I forgot to mention in my first message that during the install process the entire screen was filled, it was just after installation was complete and I logged on that display failed to fill the screen.) I still have some minor problems--mouse wheel doesn't work, setting it up as a left-handed mouse in the control panel doesn't work, and the machine still hangs on shut down--but I can work on these as I find the time.
