the O'Reilly "Learning the Vi Editor" by Linda Lamb and Arnold Robbins
is still well worth having on the shelf.
The sixth edition (1998) has sections on Vim and the other clones.

PS: Believe it or not, using Vi can become so natural
that using a WYSIWYG editor for email feels strange.
If Kmail didn't ignore then, this mail would be full of <escape>s
