To the best of our knowledge right now, SuSE does not have this bug.
Has there been official word from SUSE? If there was I missed it!
Sounds like a similar problem that Apple had with their Panasonic made superdrives. It was due to a change in media to get larger densities, I believe. It required a drive firmware update. Most problems of this type are fixed by simply updating the drives firmware. But remember most of these drive manufacturers will put out a fix immediately that will only work on windoze. I remember the Apple patch came a couple of months after the fact.
This is caused by LG. They decided not to implement the FLUSH_CACHE command in their units, which is acceptable - FLUSH_CACHE support is not required. However, since they weren't using it, they decided to use that command for something else: modifying the firmware(!).
Now, any software which uses the perfectly acceptable FLUSH_CACHE on one of these drives doesn't get an "unimplemented" error, it actually corrupts the drive's firmware. It seems to do it to the point where the drive can't even accept a new firmware download.
There are reports of bits of Windows software trashing drives; Mandrake were unlucky enough to be first Linux distributor to ship a kernel which happened to send this unusual command.

Ya, when I read this on /. it seems to be a running concensus among many that it wasn't Mandrake but LG that has created the problem. Now given what you've said it makes sense. LG decided to think windows only? I don't know, but this move seems a little on the bonehead side IMHO. Thanks for the info.
