I am using several firewire drives successfully on a SuSE 8.2 system (Matrox 160 GB and 240 GB IIRC). If memory serves me right, I initially had some issues with mounting under 8.1 and occasionally had to reboot the system before the kernel would recognize the HD. I take it that you loaded the necessary kernel modules before you attempted to mount the HD. As of lately both HDs are mounting without fail. Perhaps they have learned to obey :). Oh, and I remember one more issue I had: Bought a firewire cable that worked fine under windows but not for the life of it under linux. I have not researched the finer details of this obscure behavior and simply gotten myself another cable. This doesn't seem to be a problem in your case as you were initially able to format the drive, right? Now, I still have an issue when I unmount one of the firewire HDs and unhook it. This will invariably make the kernel spit up with a journaling error (I use reiserfs on my HDs) and the other HD can not be accessed anymore. Since I don't have to do this very often it is a minor annoyance at this point, nothing else. Best regards, Alex. On Mon, 27 Oct 2003, Sergio Espinoza Dien wrote:

Hello all,
I am running 8.2. Installed and fdisk'd a firewire, which the system recognizes as sda. When I try to mount it, it reports that I need to specify the filesystem type. I formatted the drive as a linux partition which should be recognized by mount automatically. Nothing works.
Anyone seen this and any suggestions?
Thanks.

Greetings, Same problem here with my Maxtor 40GB Firewire external drive, my drive is formated as fat32 though.
I have tried for several times and made few posts to the list, no luck...
I will really appreciate some help leading to the solution of this issue, this drive will be used as my backup drive for music, videos, downloads...
Thanks in advance,
