Yes, I use dialup via an external modem on ttyS0 to surf and collect email
(SuSE 8.2 pro). I use KPPP to connect.

KPPP has an extensive help page which helped me through my setup problems.

Here is your problem (I think), your mail program cannot find the smtp and
mail servers. There appears to be a problem either with your DNS setup (
should be configured automatically on connection to point at your ISP's DNS
servers ) or possibly your routing. Your default route entry was 'blank',
which might be alright if it is configured automatically (default action
normally).
This might or might not help - I'm not an expert I'm afraid.
