printing confusion

please help, i'm having problems printing.
I'm using Suse 8.1 and a hpdeskjet648c. I've configured it through Yast and KDE Control Panel. It prints but I loose data in the margins.
For example...
Using KWrite to create a text file. If the file is under one printed page in length it prints fine with a nice 1/2 inch margin at the top. Once the page gets larger than one printed page the margins get crazy. I loose the top of the first page and parts of subsequent pages right where the margins are.
I've played with this quite a bit. Changed paper size to US Letter (which I use) been in and out of Yast and the Control Panel.
So many parts of Suse are easy to use but printing has been a long running problem for me. I've tried three different HP printers and none of them printed problem free.
What am I doing wrong!!
