I was so pleased to find your posting after I had gone through the same horrors on SuSE 8.2 with MSI FX5600 and MS6585 mobo.
good quality butter :-) If you have a VIA chipset and you are having problems then the following you should do. 1. Installation. Become root. Switch to runlevel 3 [init 3] Use the integrated installer of the last three versions [in the reverse order and then use sax2 to enable 3D]. After that, startx and use glxgears to measure FPS with all the three drivers. Choose the fastest one. 2. Problems ! After doing this, you still have some problems, like your X hanging up at startup where VGA freezes or locks up? Great! Now you need to choose the value for "Option" "NvAGP" "integer" in /etc/X11/XF86Config It can be 0,1,2, or 3. Experiment and see what you get. Also run 3Ddiag and see output if there are any errors. 3. Still problems. You shall need to tell your driver that you are going to use your AGP card at 2X or even 1X [compared to default 4X which is the most likely case]. You need to run sh ./nvidia-installer-xxxx.run --extract-only and see that a tree is created. Now locate file os-registry.c You should be able to find EnableVia4X or something parameter. Set it to No/0. Then do a "make install" in the highest directory of this newly created tree to install the freshly compiled driver. Start X again and see - it should stabilize now.
