On another box it seems grub makes no partition active.
How do I make grub correct this error while in linux so that I can
multiboot?
Can someone send me a copy of their grub multiboot menu?
BTW where is this stored?
In creating this havic I find that 8.2 made the extended partition
invisable except to *nix when mounted on the other machine. The fix
required reinstallation after rebuilding the partitions.
At this point I will try to use partition magic to use the rest of the
disk as extended and create the *nix partitions in that remaining space.

8.2 wants to ignore hda1 and designate hda5 as C and that as Win32. Also it set the extended partition as active and not multiboot.
Unless you need the changes during the update phase...
Edit the fstab file manually to your liking. As to which partition is active (meaning bootable flag), that is changed by grub, you'll have to configure it there.
