I'd say you also have to watch out with the modules. I am not 100% sure of this, but if you have compiled your own kernel and install a new one from rpm, without re-compiling, it will not find the deps for the modules and it might not boot. Normally yes but sometimes the scripts don't update mkinitrc or the boot loader. You may have to do those manually if your computer doesn't restart normally. Or you can check to see it was done first by checking the /boot directory.
