Have you tried taking the memory out to see if it is realy that.
Also are you sure you have used the right memory.
There is a difference in swap not being used, and not being available. If it is available it will normally see at least some usage. You can easily check by typing 'mount' at the prompt if you have a swap partition mounted. You can also check swap usage with top. If you see no swap mounted, you can check /etc/fstab to make sure a swap entry is there. If it's there but is for some reason not mounted, you can start it with 'swap on'. Otherwise you have to create either a swap partition or swap file if that's easier for you (for example if your partitions are full). top will also show you if your extra memory is recognized by the kernel.
