Thanks Stan and Lee -
I have a Nikon CoolScan II in the system now which I use almost exclusively under Linux, even though it only shipped with a windows driver and Nikon has so far refused to support Linux. What I been using to drive it is Vuescan from Hamrick software. The Hamrick Vuescan does a far better job of handling the CoolScan II than does the propietary Nikon software.
Hamrick's page says his Vuescan program will handly ALL Epson scanners, so I was planning on using that to run the scanner. Bsed on what I've experienced tpo date with the CoolScan II I expect the software to be able to handle the Epson with aplomb. It's more the interface with which I'm concerned. The Nikon is SCSI which works so very well with Linux while the Epson 3XXX model scanners are all USB with the %500 42 bit 1640SU being the only SCSI model. So perhaps I should reword my question along the lines of has anyone had success running these USB scanners under Linux. I'm certain it would be somewhat difficult with this 7.3 box, but moving to an 8.2 or newer box very shortly and it's with that system that I'll be running the Epson. Whichever model I do finally select, it has to do 35 mm slides well or it won't make it into the system
Thanks again for your replys,

Dave, It will handle it very well. If the negative and slide scanning is anywhere close to my Epson 1650 photo, you'll be parking the Nikon in the corner. Epson has been very friendly with Linux and they are probably the best supported.
