Ben,
I have a clue, but don't know if it is what you need. This same thing
happened to me and I found myself resetting X all the time with the
shift-backspace keystrokes.

What I found was that I had chosen a keyboard that was incompatible with
my keyboard. Running sax2 and letting it go with the pc-104 keyboard
fixed things. I had been using a Logitech keyboard previously and
changed, but did not change the settings.
