That's exactly what I did - the only thing that changed since the last time it worked is that YOU did an update on XFree.
Can't be a kernel bug (not on my hardware) since it did work before.

It's not the XFree86 update, I can assure you as that has never misbehaved that I am aware of here. Have you tried a different kernel? When did it last work on your system?
