Greetings from Amersfoort, and thank you very much for your answer, it just helped me getting started with resolving this issue. WOW, this has been a steep learning curve for me. Your answer allowed me to logon, however it left me as root in text mode, so I had to figure out what the start-up routine is, which configuration files are used and where they are located, as well as learning to use an editor. I used vims so I had to learn how to use that.
I have to lift my hat to you: that is the hard way, but you learnt a lot. Try, now that you are more relaxed, tools like mc (Midnight Comander). It allows for easy browsing, searching, and editing of files. And copy, and many thing else. And of course, it works on runlevel 1 - although it might not be installed by default. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
