Ah.  I have mplayer (v0.90pre6-3.2 from the 8.1 install), but it isn't
the packman version.  [Hmmm...  It does mention "-dvd <titleno>" so
perhaps it knows DVD, too.]  So that understands the table of contents
and such and I can just watch the movie?  Way cool!  Can't wait to try
it in the morning :-)
