boot lock problem

Hi,

since I am new to this list and I am no linux expert, please
be a little bit patient with me...

An 8.2 install was running fine since june, but locked up
yesterday without any obvious reasons (I was executing the
latex2html script at this moment). Since then, the system
locked during boot, either at "Setting up the CMOS clock" or
"Creating /var/log/boot.msg".
Starting the pc with the "Save Settings" kernel worked at
first, but the computer locked after the login, and further
boots will lock, too.
The same with the rescue system: it booted one time, but soon
after login it locked, and now locks during boot.

The main components worked properly for years in this
constellation: EPOX K7XA, Athlon 750, 512MB PC133 Infineon

In the running installation, the following non-default servers
were running on the system: Apache, SMB (WINS, files and
print), CVS

Additionally, an external SCSI streamer (SCSI controller:
Adaptec 1520) was connected to the system.

I was running a software raid 1 with two IBM 100GB-hds. The
data on the hds is of great importance.

I would be very glad for any hints what to do. I tried,
without any results, to change the DRAM clock from 133 to 100,
and I am currently running a ram test.

With best regards,
Alexander
