I guess you have AMD Athlon XP PC with VIA KTxxx chipset. Correct me if I am wrong.

This is random but well known issue with this chipset. To be precise, not even the chipset itself but particular m/b with poor power supply filters which seem to cannot handle high power consumption peaks, leading to data corruption.

I suspect this similar problem may exists with any cheap m/b, not just VIA KTxxx based.

You have to replace your m/b, better with AMD761 chipset, or newer VIA KTxxx. Please note that upgrading BIOS is not likely to help, since it is artifact of electric circuit.

No, I don't have a AMD ! I have a PIII. I've instaled the LyX rpm as you pointed out, which is updated and working fine. This makes me happier than before but it doesn't make me happy ! Regards EJ
