Thanks for all of your comments. I check out some of your motherboards that you recommended. http://www.compgeeks.com has to the cheapest place on the net. An external modem for only 17.95! That is cheap. They also had some good prices on video cards and motherboards. I was looking for a motherboard already installed in the case with the cpu also installed. I can install everything else. Also I have a 8x agp geforce4 video card so I want a motherboard that can handle that. I got a syntax motherboard and had all kinds of problems. I could not get the 3d acceraltion to work and had all kind of sound problems. My last motherboard was abit bp6 and I had no problems at all. I sold it to a friend that does not use linux. I've never heard of SuSE-certified motherboards, but there is a linux hardware compatibility list.
Want cheap, and known to run on SuSE?
You can get 400 watt Athlon certified cases for less than $50, search around on the net.
I have a K7S5A motherboard, an Athlon, and 2 256Meg PC133 SDRAMS. That combo works well with SUSE, and is about as cheap as you can get. Don't get too fast of an Athlon or Duron processor, stay under 1500 Mhz You should be able to get that board, processor and
for less than $200.
So you should be able to setup a nice system, for $250, and add another 50 for a 40 gig harddrive, and another 50 for a nice ide cd-rw (they can be had very cheap now if you include rebates, I've seen them for $10 after a bunch of rebates.)
I always go to http://pricewatch.com and check out
ram the
lowest prices and deals.
But here is a system from a decent company:
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=X-7AIA5-N-1100-SK23 $64 motherboard
$29 case
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=64X64PC133-N $72 512 Meg ram
$64 40 gig hardrive
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CDIMM00131-NB $18 56k external modem
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CDD5301-BULK-N $50 dvd-cdr-rw combo
$20 sblive sound card
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=S3298SDR-8MTV $12 cheap AGP video card
So for $329 you can have a damn nice system that runs linux. You might find better deals elsewhere, but saving on shipping is a concern when you buy from multiple suppliers.
