Yes, I had my LinkSys router connected to the "modem" as well. But I was told that I could not connect the LinkSys directly to the ADSL connection that came into the house, so I did not try that, figuring that the voltages or something might burn out the router. Maybe that's all BS, but I don't know. --doug At 19:31 08/23/2003 -0400, Ken Schneider wrote:

I'm in the US and have DSL for over 3 years. The adsl modem supplied by my ISP is an Alcatel SpeedTouch Home and worked flauless for that time. When it was first installed I had my linux box connected to it. Now I am using a linksys router which is connected to it without any problems as well.

I had ADSL and my "modem" died. I was told by the company (i-2000.com) that I could not connect my router, I would have to get a new modem, which would cost about $300 unless I could find one for less on e-bay. Of course I could not get to e-bay, since the modem had died. I wound up getting a cable connection, from a different company, which costs me more per month and does not seem to work quite as well. BTW, you cannot buy an ADSL modem in a computer store. --doug

i intend to purchase an ADSL modem (preferably an internal one) and would like to know if any of you out there know of a list of compatible ADSL modems that you can acquire or of one that you would recommend.

FWIW, I would recommend a router. I have used an ISDN router for 5 years now, and I am soon moving house and changing to ADSL - and getting a router. My experience of this solution is so good, that even with a standalone machine I would still use a router [connected by ethernet NOT usb].
Once configured they need no attention, unless you change ISP. You can run many operating systems on your machines, you can have more than 1 machine online [and simultaneously], you can wipe them and start again, but your basic external connection remains unaffected. Of course you have to configure your ethernet, but this is quite straightforward compared to configuring external connectivity.
I am considering the SMC7404bra based on known brand and features, although I have no reports good or bad.
