just to make sure that this was not the problem. Well now I have a diferent one... When I start k3b I get a message saying
No support for ATAPI with cdrdao You will not be able to use all youe reading devices as copy sources since there is at least one not configured to use SCSI emulation and your system does not support ATAPI with cdrdao. Solution: The best and recommended solution is to enable ide-scsi (SCSI emulation) foo all writeer devices. This way you won't have any problems.
I think I can understand what it is saying, but a clue on how to enable ide-scsi emulation would have been helpful. I searched the k3b configuration options and there's nothing there. I went to Yast hardware and couldn't find anything either.

Jose, K3b no longer uses cdrdao to burn cds, it is now using cdrecord, so the message is just concerning cdrdao and not k3b's ability to burn. CDrecord will in fact use ATAPI IDE drives without problems, but k3b still likes the scsi emulation. Have you ran k3b Setup program yet? You should always do that first in order to see what you have available and let it reset the the permissions on those programs needed to burn, etc. I think when you do that, you will see your cdrw in the listed devices.
