Hello SuSe gooroos..please help me out with this if ya can! :) -Alex ================= We have a Xerox 4850 printer hooked up to our Ethernet network. The printer is run by a Sun work station. The print server is a Linux (SuSe 8.1) system apparently running CUPS as the spooler. We want to build a second server to control the printer but have been unsuccessful so far. The new server is running Red Hat 9.1. Actually, if we can just print directly to the printer from a Windows PC, that would be a solution, too. On the RH system, we were able to set up the print spooler to go to a Laserjet 5si on the network as well as a Xerox N40 will very little effort. It was simply a matter of going to their IP addresses and port 9100. Samba is being used on the RH system to also provide file server features to the all Windows network. The RH configuration seems to be identical to the SuSe with regard to the printer set ups. But the printer just doesn't want to acknowledge the existence of any other spoolers. The SuSe system is mission critical we have been doing very little probing. Perhaps something was missed. Also, we know very little about the set up of the Sun. Using LPQ command on Windows (Windows 2000), we are able to check the 2 working printers fine. The Xerox returns a message "Access denied from your host". We found an lpd.allow file on the sun that had the SuSe server listed. We added the RH server to the list but with no change. Right now, we feel the RH is set up OK, but the Xerox is denying access. We don't know much about the internals of the Sun or it's set up. We can telnet and FTP to the Xerox OK. But it is on a non routable IP address so I'm not sure how we could set it up to allow external access unless we make put the IP address as a dmz or do a forwarding of some kind. Exposing the printer to the internet might not be a very smart thing to do unless you have a suggestion.
